This book contains a series of works by the Orange County-based artist Fay Colmar. She created works from 1970–2019, but this book was not compiled until 2023. While this collection is divided into chapters for ease of perusing, the works were not produced in such a clean order. Only through retrospective analysis, do the threads between works stand out so dramatically. Sprinkled throughout are articles published about the artist’s career, unless otherwise stated they were placed only for aesthetic value and did not relate to the works in the chapters.
In the spring of 2022 Fay Colmar lamented the process of collecting her art. She wanted a coffee table book to share with her friends that wasn’t too expensive to print and could be easily shipped anywhere. I naturally, being her grandson, volunteered to help.
There were already plenty of photos of works from over the years. They were just scattered between dusty shelves in her daughter/my mother’s storage unit, boxes buried under legal documents, and more than a few squirreled away inside an old MacBook.
My mother and I began organizing and scanning the hundreds of glossy photos and newspaper clippings. I set about restoring what needed restoring and created the layout of the book.
In the summer of 2023 we settled on a final draft of the book and decided to print through Amazon's self publishing service, Kindle Direct Publishing. The service would provide a relatively cheep way to print high quality books.
All Fay would need to would be to provide a link to her friends who could fill out the delivery instructions on their own. Along the way we had to sacrifice some creative choices, like the original cover, to ease into Jeff Bezos’s populist publishing process.
